Elvis
took thirty-one takes of this until he was satisfied, and what emerged,
then slashing guitar of Scotty Moore, the machine gun snare of D.J. Fontanna,
the background vocalizing by The Jordanaires, comprised an explosive rock
n' roll anthem.
The emotional texture of the lyrics as shout-sung by Elvis, sneering and uncompromising, defined a generation of young Americans. The song was performed on The Berle Show on the 5th of June 1956, The Allen Show on the 1st July 1956,and on all three of the Sullivan shows (9th Sept, 28 Oct and 6th Jan 1957), the Sullivan shows were the one's he was cut-off from the waist down by the cameras. |
