Elvis
played and sang this song for twenty two years before he finally put it
on record. It's no small wonder why fans were moved to tears by his interpretation.
Many versions of the song were recorded from 1955 onwards; Lee Baxter
(1955), Al Hibbler (1955), Roy Hamilton (1955), June Volli (1955), Vito
and the Saturations (1963), The Righteous Brothers (1965) and the Sweet
Inspirations in 1968, to name but a few. Elvis, during the last year of
his life, began playing the song at his concerts, accompanying himself
on piano, and it was recorded at the Civic Center in Saginaw, Michigan
on 25th April 1977. RCA later overdubbed Bass, organ and percussion for
release in July 1977.
