Though
songwriter's credit is usually accorded to Ma Rainey, Big Bill Broonzy
was performing this song in the 1920's. Before Elvis fell in love with
it, the song had been recorded by Chuck Willis (1957) La Vern Baker (1962),
Bobby Powell (1965), Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels (1965) and the
Animals (1966).It became a standard for opening his shows after "Also
Sprach Zarathustra", and featured rumbling drums by Ronnie Tutt and
hot licks by James Burton on lead guitar. Elvis would often segue into
"Thats All Right Mama".
